Aiea Taiheiji Kendo Tournament (Sunday, November 19, 2017)

Added on by J.K. SHISHIDO.

One person from Meikyokan entered - Reiko Hayashi participated in the Women's Open division. She was eliminated in the first round, losing both of her matches.

I especially enjoyed watching matches by Caden Matsumoto (Kenshikan Kendo Club), the Tamura brothers from Japan (currently at Kenshikan Kendo Club), and Braxton Fukutomi sensei (Aiea Kendo Club).

Everyone was happy to have Aiea Taiheiji Kendo Club host a tournament again. It has been several years since the last one. Thank you Aiea Taiheiji Kendo Club.

2017 HKF Census

Added on by J.K. SHISHIDO.

It's finally done. I started last December and finally collected the last bit of information on March 25. I've asked L. Makiya (Kenshikan Kendo Club) to double check my math so there's a small possibility of minor (I hope) corrections, but otherwise the report is complete with 100% of HKF dojos returning information. Thank you to all of the dojo heads for supporting this project. Let's do this every year. :-)

Study materials from old HKF website slowly migrating to HKF info area

Added on by J.K. SHISHIDO.

Since the old HKF website (hawaiikendo.com) has been taken over by pornographer-capitalists, I prefer to not send anyone there, even if it's for accessing the very nice archive of kendo information that Teshima sensei and a few others created sometime before its abandonment and subsequent kidnapping around 2006. I've decided to cut and paste or screen capture the informational content from that website and move it to this website's HKF info area as an interim step; at some point if the HKF would like to permanently archive these materials at the official HKF website (hawaiikendofederation.org), I think that would be a VERY GOOD IDEA.

In the meantime, here is what I've copied so far:

HKF Standard Protocols for Practices (from hawaiikendo.com, retrieved 2016-09-18)
[ online document ] or [ PDF, 37KB ]

Special Kendo Kata (from hawaiikendo.com, retrieved 2016-09-18)
[ online document ]

Excerpt from Kendo Reader, by Noma Hisashi (from hawaiikendo.com, retrieved 2016-09-18)
[ online document ]

Collection of essays from Kenkyukai meeting archive (from hawaiikendo.com, retrieved 2016-09-18)
[ online document ]

All good to study. I will move everything from the Kenkyukai Curriculum and Handbook whenever I have some spare time. I think we should take care of this kind of information, as 1) it required quite a lot of effort to produce it in the first place; and 2) since the HKF no longer maintains control over the hawaiikendo.com domain name there is no guarantee that this information will stay online for any length of time.

HKF Officers 2016-2019

Added on by J.K. SHISHIDO.

Here are the results from yesterday's election:

President: Kathleen Nekomoto (Kenyukai)
Vice-President: Wesley Fujimoto (Mililani)
Secretary: Jon Shishido (Meikyokan)
Treasurer: Mike Sone (Mitsune)

Also, I don't think this is an "official" policy, but yesterday President Nekomoto mentioned that non-Board Members will be allowed to attend Board Meetings. (They just can't vote or say anything.) I was under the impression that Board of Director meetings are/will be closed to non-Directors, so I am glad to hear this. All MKK members are HKF members, so I'd like to encourage everyone to attend Board meetings.

2016 HKF Executive Board elections

Added on by J.K. SHISHIDO.

2016 is an election year in the HKF. (Elections are currently held every 3 years.) The counting of the ballots will happen at the Board of Directors meeting on February 14. The nominated candidates are:

President: Seth Harris (Myohoji), Kathy Nekomoto (Kenyukai)
Vice-President: Wesley Fujimoto (Mililani)
Secretary: Jon Shishido (Meikyokan), Yoshiro Takahashi (Kenyukai)
Treasurer: Mike Sone (Mitsune)

Congratulations to Wesley Fujimoto & Mike Sone - already winners.

Last Tuesday the candidates received a request from Election Officer Phyllis Sone to write a 300 word statement about ourselves. This was optional but everyone submitted one.

Read the candidates' statements.
Secret Ballot.
